Labour’s Candidate for MP in East Wiltshire, Rob Newman, has welcomed the results of the May 2024 elections – including the Wiltshire Police & Crime Commissioner election, which saw Labour come within a whisker of defeating the Conservatives.
Labour’s candidate for PCC, Stanka Adamcova, secured 36,345 votes across the county – coming second to the Conservatives by only around 2,000 votes.
Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats – who came second in the last PCC election in 2021, and whose candidate in that election backed Labour this time – had 14,000 fewer votes this time around, and came behind the independent candidate in fourth place.
Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for East Wiltshire, Rob Newman, said:
“I want to say a huge thank you to every single person who came out to vote Labour on May 2. I was out campaigning as Labour secured an even bigger mandate to run Swindon Borough Council, in a result which bodes well for the General Election when it comes.
“I’d like to congratulate Stanka Adamcova on a superbly fought campaign, on pushing the Conservatives incredibly close, and on pushing the Liberal Democrats into fourth place.
“In the Swindon local elections, Labour and the Lib Dems were level pegging in the Ridgeway ward, which falls into the East Wiltshire parliamentary constituency. Meanwhile, in Wroughton and Wichelstowe, the Lib Dems failed to beat the Tories – not least because their last councillor went missing in action and failed to turn up.
“The General Election will be upon us soon. When it is, the choice is between five more years of the Tories, or a Labour Goverment. I want East Wiltshire to have a strong voice in that Government – not be sidelined on the opposition benches. As the polls show, it’s Labour that’s in the best position to unseat Danny Kruger and beat the Tories.”
