Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for East Wiltshire, Rob Newman, has launched his campaign for the General Election with a pledge to turn the page on years of chaos and scandal and “do politics differently”.
After Rishi Sunak told the nation that the General Election would be held on Thursday 4 July, Mr Newman immediately announced five commitments to voters in East Wiltshire if he is elected as the area’s MP:
- Rob will take no second jobs or hold any outside interests – just be 100% committed to being a strong representative for East Wiltshire’s communities.
- Rob will be an accessible, responsive and dedicated MP – holding not just regular in-person surgeries to help constituents with issues, but roving street surgeries and virtual sessions.
- Rob will hold an annual Constituents Assembly – a conference for voters from across East Wiltshire to tell their MP about their priorities.
- Rob will embark on a Village Tour – visiting each part of the constituency, not just the major urban areas, to hear from voters.
- Rob will launch six Advisory Councils – bodies dedicated to specific areas or groups of voters to help inform his work as MP. This will include advisory councils for women, business, rural affairs, young people, older people, and public services.
Speaking after the election announcement, Rob Newman said:
“People are rightly cynical about politics, because over the last few years, all it has done is let them down. Voters have been disgusted by scandal after scandal, and watched aghast as Conservative chaos has hit them hard.
“We’ve had Boris Johnson’s partying in Number 10, Liz Truss’ hit to mortgages, and Rishi Sunak’s inability to fix the problems the country faces. I know many people feel that politicians have forgotten that they are there to serve the public and to get things done.
“I’m determined that if voters put their trust in me at this election, they will get a decent, hard-working MP who puts them first. Politics should be about service. That’s why I’ve announced five commitments today which will ensure that, in East Wiltshire, we do politics differently.
“After 14 years of Conservative decline – after all the exhausting mess of the last few years – it’s now finally time for you to have your say. Now is the moment to turn the page and choose a fairer economy, a rescued NHS, stronger defence, and a restored environment.
“Even if you’ve never voted Labour before, now is the time for change. Vote Labour on 4 July and let’s get Britain’s future back.”
